The Next Step

X-Rays are available on a clinician referred basis only. If you are unsure about the next step in your treatment or would like to talk in more detail about this or any of our other services please contact us

Key Information

X-Rays usually take around 10 to 15 minutes.

The radiation received from any single X-ray is very small, and would be similar to the amount you would be exposed to on a transatlantic flight.

X-Ray

An X-Ray is a non-invasive, pain free way for us to get a picture of your internal body structure and can help to identify signs of damage or abnormalities.

An image is produced by passing X-Rays through your body, some of which are absorbed as they pass through. Different parts of the body absorb different amounts of X-Rays depending on how dense they are.

In the final image, dense structures such as bone appear white and less dense structures such as the lungs appear black.

Our Radiographer

Cornwall House Clinic has a team of highly qualified specialist radiographers with over 20 years experience so you can be assured of a high quality service.

The Scan

At Home

A basic X-Ray requires no special preparation. However, some X-Rays of the kidneys, stomach or bowel will require some preparation which we will send to you with your appointment letter.

At Cornwall House Clinic

When you arrive the radiographer will explain the procedure to you and answer any questions you might have. It is important that you tell us at this stage if you might be pregnant as it may not be appropriate to carry out the examination.

You may be asked to put on a gown instead of your usual clothes depending on the area of your body to be studied. The radiographer will then make sure you are comfortably positioned ready for the X-Ray, you may be sitting, lying or standing depending on which part of your body we will be looking at. The X-Ray machine will shine a light on your body so the radiographer can make sure you are in the best position.  You will need to remain still during the X-Ray so making sure you are comfortable at the start will really help.

Depending on the area of your body being examined, the radiographer may ask you to hold your breath while the X-Ray is being taken.

After the X-Rays have been taken we will check the images are of a high quality before you go home.

The Results

We understand that waiting for the results of a test can be a worrying time. Our aim is to get accurate results back to you as quickly as possible.

After your X-Ray, the images will be studied by one of our highly qualified consultant radiologists who will send a report to the doctor who sent you for the X-Ray within four working days. You will need to make arrangements with them to talk about your results.
